A couple weeks ago I posted the script for the Station Generator trailer. I’d been finding it difficult to progress on this. I was reluctant to get started because I find the whole idea of recording a live action segment for Station Generator (Or anything I guess) to be quite daunting. I’ve never done anything like this before really. The last time I did, I had a lot help from professionals, this time I’m on my own.
I don’t have a revision of a script to show you, or anything at all really. But I want to talk a little about the experience. I noticed I was making excuses to not even think about doing the trailer after I had written the script.
When I caught myself finding reasons to not do it I took stock and decided enough was enough. Time to get this thing done. So I put the word out that I was looking for a VO artist who wouldn’t mind helping me out, and started asking my friends and family if they’d be in the trailer. I also started up a To-Do on Habitica to both track my progress (currently 11/16 tasks done) and to help give me motivation to complete them.
After a few days I had enough people to get moving on it so I organised a date to get it done (yesterday as it turns out) and let everyone know. In typical Irish fashion a few people changed their mind right at the end so I was left short, which turned out to be a blessing because I was able to get someone else to fill the gap who added a whole lot to the experience (diversity is win).
We kicked off at around 8pm and didn’t finish till maybe 1:30am. Everyone had a great time and I had gotten 20Gb of video to look through. Plenty more blooper material that usable, but that’s why you shoot everything multiple times right? So while the whole thing still looks like an amateur shot it, it’s at least not utterly terrible. I’m quite happy with what we got and hopefully it will be more than the sum of it’s parts when I get it edited together and add in some sound effects and transitions and such like. A bit of music and then the VO.
I still need to get proper footage of the app itself, but that shouldn’t pose a particularly difficult problem. I’ve coded a demo reel into the game now and gave users the option to load it if they like, but I’ll be able to use to to capture relatively smooth footage of some space stations at work.
I still have a couple shot scenes I need to shoot for the trailer, but they don’t require anyone in them, just shots of the station being printed and that sort of thing, I might do them tonight if I get the time.

A Spindle type space station
My goal is to have the trailer finished within the next two weeks, though I’m gonna try and get it done by next week if I can. When the trailer is done I can get the other marketing materials done get a date for getting the Station Generator on the Humble Store which I’m rather looking forward to.
And when that’s done I can get back to working on the next update for Station Generator, the UI overhaul. It feels like I haven’t worked on the app directly in a long time and I’m rather looking forward to getting back to the bread and butter of dev, working on the app itself.
