PS. I love Who

I was gonna write about the cost of gamedev this evening but really I need more energy to write something interesting about that. Instead I’m going to talk a little bit about why Dr. Who doesn’t excite me any more. Your views may differ and that’s fine, if you still enjoy Dr. Who and think everything I say here that’s totally fine, I’m glad you get something out of Who. We can still be friends!

Mostly it’s because everything the series has become far too bogged down in it’s own lore and the Doctors infallibility. I get that it’s mainly aimed at children/young adult’s and that’s fine. But that doesn’t mean you have to constantly retread the same ground over and over. In a way, he’s become a parody of himself, and it’s something I’ve seen happen again and again in series that just seem to go on for too long.

Text Adventure Tutorial: Structure

Now that we’re able to break a players input into useful chunks it’s time to do something with it. So today the goal is to build the structure for the map, and the verbs to move around that map. We’ll create a few new files and #include them so we can use them. You could just put all the code in one file but this makes it much easier to handle, edit and most importantly maintain. We’ll also be using enum’s (enumerators) and struct’s (structures) to create our world and the rules that define it.

I’m pretty wiped out from a long and stressful week so today I’m gonna recommend some games I’ve played that maybe you’ve not heard about. I’ll post the next step on the text adventure tutorial next week.

Text Adventure Tutorial: Section Command

For the first tutorial we’re going to look at something really important. We’re going to create the first tool in our toolbox for dealing with user commands. It is of course the section function. A small function that takes the player’s input and splits it up into words we can later make use of. It’s not a glamorous function, and doesn’t produce anything the player can see but it is absolutely vital to any parser.
