New York what? That’s what I ask myself every time I see this abbreviation because I’m an idiot. You’re not an idiot so knew exactly what it meant of course 🙂 I hope you had a great one, and are ready for another one because that’s what you’re getting whether you like it or not.

Today I was scheduled to write the first part of the Interactive Fiction tutorial but unfortunately that is going to have to wait until the new year, due to the sad news that my wife’s Grandfather, known to all as Gaga, passed away with morning. And with christmas and new years looming I will likely not have the time to write such a tutorial.
This is just going to be a short introduction to creating your own text adventure. I’ll start getting into code in another post. They’ll assume only the most basic of programming knowledge, more on that later.
So why am I writing this? Surprisingly I found it more difficult than I would have expected to find resources for absolute beginners writing their own parser for a text adventure so I thought this would be a good place to put one that might be useful to others! Your google skills may be better than mine however, feel free to share resources in the comments.
It’s simple isn’t it? You press a button or push a stick, maybe point and click with your mouse and simple as that, your avatar in game responds with alacrity. From the single input of an endless runner like Adamatomic’s Canabalt to the myriad control input of Microsoft’s Flightsim X with all it’s potential add-ons it’s hard ignore the importance of getting movement right. And like the best of many things, when it’s done right the player will never notice the turning gears behind the curtain.
